1. Introduction

Scio.ly ("we", "us") provides practice questions, tests, team tools and related features for Science Olympiad students and coaches (the "Service"). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have.

2. Information we collect

  • Account information: your email address, display name, username and, if you add one, a profile photo. If you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from that service.
  • Practice activity: the questions you attempt, your answers, scores and accuracy, the events you practise, and rewards such as Ions and cosmetics.
  • Team information: the teams you belong to, your role, assignments given to you and your submissions, and anything you post to a team.
  • Content you send us: bug reports, contact form messages, custom tests and edits you suggest.
  • Technical information: cookies and browser storage that keep you signed in and remember your preferences, and error reports that help us fix problems.

3. How we use your information

  • To run the Service: your account, practice, tests, teams and leaderboards.
  • To generate explanations and grade free-response answers. The question and your answer are sent to an AI provider for this.
  • To keep the Service fair and secure, including detecting automated or fraudulent activity on leaderboards.
  • To send account emails: email verification, password resets and security notices such as a changed password. We do not send marketing email.
  • To understand how the Service is used and improve it.

4. Who can see your information

  • Leaderboards: members of a leaderboard you join see your display name, username, profile photo and your questions answered and accuracy on that board. They never see your email address.
  • Teams: your teammates see your name and role. Team captains and coaches can see their members' practice activity (questions answered, accuracy, events practised, last active) and assignment results, and can ask the Service to email you a password reset link. They cannot see or change your password or email address.
  • Everyone else: we do not sell your information or use it for advertising.

5. Service providers

We use the following providers to operate the Service. They process information only to provide their service to us.

  • Supabase: accounts, sign-in and database
  • Cockroach Labs: database
  • Vercel: website hosting
  • Resend: delivery of account emails
  • Google: AI explanations and grading (Gemini), and Google sign-in
  • Discord: Discord sign-in
  • Sentry: error monitoring
  • Ably: real-time features such as live team and Codebusters sessions

6. Keeping and deleting your information

We keep your information while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from your profile page, which removes your account, profile and practice history. Some records, such as backups and security logs, may persist for a limited time before they are removed.

7. Students and children

Many of our users are middle and high school students. If you are under 13, use the Service only with the permission of a parent, guardian or your school. A parent or guardian who believes their child has given us information without permission can contact us and we will delete it.

8. Security

We protect your information with measures such as encrypted connections, hashed passwords, email verification and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don't use elsewhere.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page.
